Training incentive

Training montage from Rocky III, for when you need to get motivated:

Rocky III is, without doubt, the best Rocky, although the recent Rocky Balboa is 2nd…

Scott Adkins’ “Wolverine” choreography

Some excellent behind-the-scenes footage of Scott Adkins rehearsing for his fight with XXXX and YYYY at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You know, where they’re on top of the HHHH when JJJJ and YYYY went to the RRRR to see PPPP. Ah, enough with the spoilers, here’s the choreography (more than likely done by J. J. ‘Loco’ Perry):

Some crazy, crazy moves in there, like at 0.11 and 1.01!

Scott Adkins in training for Undisputed 3

Courtesy of the Scott Adkins fan site (yeah, yeah, I’m a fanboy), here’s a training video of Scott for his new film, Undisputed 3:

I’ve trained at a couple of Scott’s courses for the PKA, they’ve always been very good and I come away learning a few more pointers and tricks. He absolutely kicks like a mule, very powerful punches and kicks, all good inspirational stuff.

And if you’ve not done so, Undisputed 2 is worth a watch – for a DVD martial arts movie, the production values, acting, choreography etc. are very high. Like I said, I’m a fanboy ;)

Kickboxing – getting back to normal

Finally! Had a decent training session tonight – had a good stretch to start with, and a good long warm-up. Then multiple attacks, lots of pad work and a quick cool down. Whilst hitting the pads, I felt back to my normal self – hitting the pads with not too much trouble, no (well, minimal) pain in my knees, good speed and power.

After the knackering my ankle in my 2nd dan grading, the car crash in Nov 2007, and then trouble with my knees due to something (car / fallen arches / old age), it’s been a long slog to get back to normalcy, but I feel a bit more like my old self again :D

Some parkour

As a contrast to the long, long rant below, I cheered myself up by watching a parkour (no, not hardcore) video. I am in awe of the athletes in this video, if I could do just 5% of what they do, I’d be happy:

Phenomenal stuff – it’s a bit long, but worth the watch. Anyway, you weren’t doing anything important, were you? ;-)

Ow, my ankle!

As a follow up to the previous post, my 2nd dan did not go as planned :(

Whilst the first part of the grading went ok, I knackered my ankle by landing on it badly whilst doing some bag work. Needless to say, I was not a happy chap, as I will have to do the rest of the grading at some point in the future.

Which means I’ll have to keep fit, instead of gorging myself during the run up to Christmas. I actually bought a four-pack of Peeterman Artois (I’m not much of a drinker) to celebrate finishing the grading, so those will be left untouched until I do…

Meanwhile, I’m still coding up the site for a friend (and I may have a couple more to do), piddling about on the XBox enjoying Stranglehold and falling back in love with Guitar Hero, and generally staying on top of life. I am, obviously, spitting bullets that Gordon Brown sold us down the river in Lisbon, but I believe we are finally in for a change of Government at the next election – thank goodness.

The “I’ve been busy” post

Well, it’s been a while since my last post. Basically, I’ve been training for my 2nd dan and doing a site for a good friend. There is naturally plenty going on in the world that I’d love to give my oh-so-important views on (Burma, Gordon Brown bottling an election, fix term elections, driver’s skill [or lack of it] in Derbyshire, etc.), but until my 2nd dan is over, it’ll have to wait…

Thwacky kick, butterflies and mestres, oh my

Ok, finally got the YouTube links working :-) I was training last Wednesday and was trying out the kick shown below. It’s a round kick to the head, but after faking a big front kick. The idea is to draw your opponents guard down to block the kick, and then twat him in the head with the round kick instead :-) It’s coming on, but I really, really need to work on my flexibility as it will help with the whipping across of the foot at head height.

Here’s another kick that I want to add to my repertoire, a butterfly kick. It’s a great tutorial from the guys at 3Run, I keep practising the moves but need to go back to the basics as per the tutorial:

Oh, ok, one more. I believe this is a chap called Espirro Mirim, a capoeira mestre. Just watch the video and be inspired :)
